This page introduces the concept of Free Radicals.
You may or may not have ever even heard of these things -- "free radicals." I recall once talking to a doctor who was earning well over $1,000,000 per year. She had been in practice for more than 20 years. In our dinner conversation I casually used the term "free radical," and she asked me "what is that?"
I fell through the floor!
Yet, even though most doctors will say they understand that term, very few of them appreciate the importance of that term. Far fewer of them could explain it to you.
I've studied these things, but it was astounding to me that as I prepared to write this page I decided to do some research on the web. I use a search program (Copernic) which, itself, uses about 15 other search engines. I've set it to get the top 30 web sites for each engine, for whatever search phrase I enter. I entered "free radical definition" and had about 250 web sites to visit. Interestingly, one of my early web sites at: http://www.oralchelation.com/microhydrin/index.html was within the top ten of those 250 listings.
Now that I was looking with a very critical eye, I decided that my own earlier explanation was not adequate. But, the amazing thing was that I did not find what I consider an adequate definition ANYWHERE within those 250 web sites.
I am now ready to claim that this page presents you with an understandable and accurate explanation of free radicals that you would not find anywhere else on the web. I make this claim for a term that I consider responsible for all cancer, heart disease, arthritis and many other diseases!
Wouldn't you think that dozens of people should be presenting this information, and tying their health products (vitamins, etc.) to this key cause of death! Wouldn't you?
The main criticism I have of every other web site I've visited is that the authors use far too many words for which they provide no definitions. I have copied many of those pages onto this web site. You'll find them referenced down through this page. When and as you link through to some of them you will usually find that I have annotated those pages with my own comments.
Here is where you will not only learn what a free radical IS, but why you should know about it.
Free Radicals are the cause of virtually all disease and illness which is not more obviously caused by germs. Heart disease and cancer, certainly, are both caused by free radicals inside your body.
So, this is the beginning page on your search for understanding what they are and why they are important to your health.
Most people think they know what an "atom" is.
You could even have only a simple understanding of this word, and get by for our purposes here.
An "atom" is the smallest unit of matter than can be classified as an "element." The physical universe is made up of about 100 different elements, such as hydrogen, iron, oxygen, and all the others.
There are things smaller than an atom, but you have to gather the right number of these things together and have an atom before you can have an element, such as sulfur or nitrogen. Here, for instance, is a picture of an atom of helium.
Within that atom there is a center portion, called the nucleus, and "electrons" which move around the center portion much in the same way that planets move around the sun. If you look at that picture of an atom of helium, you'll notice that there are TWO electrons going around the center nucleus in a helium atom.
As more research was done on chemistry, it was soon discovered that an atom of helium could exist by itself, but an atom of hydrogen could not. This called for an explanation.
The term "free radical" has the two words, "free" and "radical."
The word "radical" has as its derivation the Late Latin word "radicalis," meaning "having roots" which further derives from "radix" or "radic-" meaning "root."
The "root" of something could be called its source, the beginning. The "root" of Christianity is Jesus Christ. The "root" of the word "radical" is "radix."
My medical dictionary defines "radical" as:
a group of atoms which enters into and goes out of chemical combinations without change, and which forms one of the fundamental constituents of a molecule.
An atom of oxygen, for instance, can combine with two atoms of hydrogen, and you have a molecule of water. This is a very stable substance. You can combine water with many other substances and the water is still in the same molecular form. You can consider the water molecule to be a "radical."
Water "enters into and goes out of chemical combinations without change."
One reason there is so much stability to this substance is that there are various "binding forces" among the various parts -- the oxygen is "connected" to the hydrogen so that they stay connected.
The word "free" here simply means not attached -- not connected. Something that is not bound, or tied, or connected could be called "free."
If you missed it, you can go to either a SHORT explanation of the whole story, or a detailed explanation on ONE PAGE. On this page you are getting more detail on one part of the story, but on either of those pages you can get the broad picture. Don't miss reading one of them. You can actually spend many hours on this web site, depending on the depth of research and reading you want to do. There are an amazing 4,000 pages here -- more information on these general subjects than almost all other web sites combined! At some point along the way you will probably say, "Karl's crazy," and leave never to return to this site, or you will say "I want to try some of that oral chelation formula he writes about!"
