Nature's Sunshine is another MLM company. Many of them sell rip-off products. Their promotional material often includes no formula, no ingredients, no quantities. I've sent off an eMail to get data. The reply shows trivial quantities of most of the ingredients and fails to disclose the quantities on the important amino acids. Nature's Sunshine also sells a "Taheebo" product that is nothing more than sawdust -- this material cannot be digested at all. It is appalling that so many MLM frauds are being promoted on the web -- and that consumers are not being told the truth. There are many MLM junkies out there -- they know nothing about their products but can sound very sincere.

>Dear Karl,
I purchased a bottle of, what I believe is called, "Mineral Chi", from Natures
Sunshine products, and found that it contained sodium benzoate.
From what I know of benzine, it is a solvent, and
according to Hulda Clark(biochemist), it, or any derivitive of it, is bad. I
took it back, and they later called me and told me that it is made from
blueberries, and is all natural. I completely disagree, and feel like they are
thinking that ALL of us out here just fell off of a turnip truck.
Please let me know...............did I?
Anxiously awaiting your answer -
Sincerely,
Dear Pat (from Karl)
Generally I don't much trust the firm, Nature's
Sunshine, and generally
I would not much trust the ingredients in soft drinks.
Without a more careful research, I would think this is a good substance
to stay away from.
I have a critical page about Nature's Sunshine at:
http://www.heart-disease-bypass-surgery.com/data/competition/20.htm
Nature's Sunshine sells a fraudulent form of Taheebo:
Pau d Arco/Taheebo Tea (7oz)
Immune:Nature's Sunshine's pau d'arco comes from Brazil. It is
available in a variety of forms, including capsules, bulk for tea,
liquid extract and soothing, softening lotion. Each capsule contains
500 mg pau d'arco. Five capsules equal two cups of Taheebo tea. Take
two capsules with a meal three times daily. Liquid, take 1/2 teaspoon
with water three times daily. Lotion is for external use only.
I believe this stuff is pure sawdust from the tree -- it can't be
digested because is it cellulose -- so it is a fraud.
This is one of the worst frauds I know.
Keep on doing it! '
Thanks, Pat.

Dear Pat,
here is some data I found on the web:
Current pallet load price: $ 0.58 / lb.
Revolving molecule <http://www.soybean.com/molecule.gif>
Also known
as "benzoate of soda," sodium benzoate is the sodium salt of "benzoic
acid," an FDA-approved, polyunsaturated fat that has been used by food
manufacturers for over 80 years to inhibit microbial growth. Sodium
benzoate can prevent growth of almost all microorganisms (yeast,
bacteria, and fungi). It operates best in an acidic environment, and it
works synergically with other food-grade preservatives -- most notably
potassium sorbate. Sodium benzoate is freely found in nature, and in
fact, even organically grown cranberries or prunes can contain levels
of benzoic acid that exceed the legal limit imposed by the FDA on U.S.
food manufacturers (0.1% by weight), although the level normally found
in berries will be in the range of 0.05 to 0.1%.
<http://www.soybean.com/space.gif>
Sodium benzoic, as well as
benzoic acid are completely SAFE, and like the preservative, potassium
<http://www.soybean.com/ps.htm>
sorbate (sorbic acid), have been
labelled SAFE by the leading food additive authority, Dr. Michael
Jacobsen, founder and president of Center for Science in the Public
Interest. In 1954 Dr. W.H. Stein reported in the Journal of the
American Chemical Society that benzoate is a natural metabolite of the
human body. Because commercial sodium benzoate is today made in
laboratories, it has sometimes been banned by certain entities in the
health food industry, there is no scientific basis for any claim that
benzoate is unhealthful. It is a substance natural to the body's own
metabolism, and in this respect is no difference in its functioning as
a preservative than vinegar (acetic acid).
<http://www.soybean.com/space.gif>
Sodium benzoate has been the
subject of extensive experimentation: it has been tested in
longitudinal and short-term feeding experiements in man, dogs, and
rats. In one experiment in Germany, four generations of rats were
continuously exposed to 0.05 or 1 percent sodium benzoate in their
diet. Scientists did not observe any harmful effects on growth, life
span, or internal organs. No tumors were detected. All evidence points
to sodium benzoate as a safe preservative, except for rare instances of allergic
reaction.
<http://www.soybean.com/space.gif>
Operating Conditions: Sodium
benzoate, like potassium sorbate <http://www.soybean.com/ps.htm>
, is
effective only under acidic conditions (preferably less than pH 3.6).
Within the food industry, its use is therefore restricted to such foods
as preserves, jams, salad dressing, fruit juices, pickles, and
carbonated drinks; however, it will functionally work well in the
proper acidic conditions, with good dispersion.

The stuff is pretty cheap at $ .58 per pound.
I then continued to look, to see if I could find something negative.

Here is a reference that calls it poisonous:

Here is one person's complaint about the stuff:
<http://www.prostatitis.org/prostatitis.gif>
About Sodium Benzoate
Note: This page is based on a newsgroup posting. As always, consider
whether what is said here really applies to you and whether this is
credible information. Our standard (see credo
<http://www.prostatitis.org/credo.html>
) is whether a thesis is
"interesting." We let you decide. Recently I felt exceptionally bad
after a shopping trip and after much thinking worked out that the only
difference that day had been that I drank two large glasses of Sprite.
A trial confirmed the insight. A number of posters have suggested
avoiding soft drinks because of the carbonate content, however this
seems unlikely as a cause of problems: I drink fizzy mineral water all
the time without any trouble.
The only non-innocuous ingredient specified on the label of Sprite is
Sodium Benzoate (in UK/Europe, also referred to as E211; E210, E212 and
E213 are benzoic acid and other benzoate salts, if you should come
across them). Further tests revealed that I have similar problems with
other soft drinks that have benzoate in them but not in those that
haven't. E.g. unbranded tonic water makes me ill, whereas Schweppes
tonic water doesn't. The first contains Sodium Benzoate, the second not.
I haven't been absolutely thorough in my research, but enough to
convince myself. The same may or may not be true for others. Sodium
Benzoate is absorbed directly into the blood and is then broken down by
the liver (N.B. as are alcohol and caffeine -- is there a link here?)
It is generally considered safe but on the other hand some people are
known to be allergic to it (skin rashes etc.) and it is thought that it
is implicated in Attention Deficit Disorder (see recent postings). Some
people believe it possibly to be carcinogenic. (Originally a newsgroup

Hi Karl,
Thank you for the information.
The Link you sent me, for Natures Sunshine, could not be displayed. I'm new
on the computer, and don't know if that means that something is possibly
wrong with the way you sent it, or if the problem is on their end. I'd
really like to know more on anything negative about Natures Sunshine, and
would appreciate your help with this.
Thank You -

Dear Karl,
My dad is dying of emphysema, congestive heart failure, diabetes, and most recently a tumor was found growing on his bronchial.
This tumor is about the size of a grapefruit.
I have just started giving him Pau D' Arco (which is known to reduce tumors).
Do you think that this would be safe to make a poultice or cream with MSM and Pau D' Arco combined and apply it to his bronchial area?
Am I understanding you correctly when you say that it will take the Pau D' Arco through the skin (since it is a penetrant) directly down into the tumor area?
Please answer me as soon as possible. Thanks. Shirley
Karl
Dear Karl,
The brand of Pau D'Arco that I use is from Nature's Sunshine Products. They claim to use the highest form of this. Is this a good brand, compared to yours? How is it different, if at all?? Thank you for your input and time.
Shirley
Dear Karl,Thank you for answering my questions. Please forgive me for being skeptical, but I would like more info on how you came to know that Nature's Sunshine Products sell 'fake' Pau D' Arco? Can you give me actual statistics and origination of these facts? If what you say is true, I am a very angry person right now for being 'robbed'. I just spent my life savings sending this stuff to my dad. I heard that Nature's Sunshine had a situation with bad Pau D' Arco some time back, but corrected the problem . Is this true???? I also purchased a lot of NSP Noni juice. Can you tell me what you think of this product. Each IS is the best because of the way they dehydrate it instead of putting heat to it (via pasteurization) killing the enzymes. Also, how about the rest of their products? Thank you for answering my questions.Anxiously awaiting your reply,Shirley
Dear Shirley,All you have to do is ask Nature's Sunshine whether the contents of their capsules are ground up bark from the tree, or some form of extract. It would not be illegal to sell ground up bark -- sawdust. It would be a fraud, however, since the human body cannot digest or use cellulose. The Nature's Sunshine label does not lie, but it also does not say that you are getting an extract form of the bark. They are very careful to "tell the truth" even while misleading people. It is, of course, an MLM -- they are usually rip-offs.It is not "fake" in the sense that it is not real Pau d'Arco. It is fake in that it is worthless for human consumption.Nature's Sunshine is very aware of my accusations. They will try very hard to NOT admit what is inside that capsule. For instance, my capsules, the contents, are made this way.We start with Pau d'Arco bark, in small pieces.Soak in a mixture of alcohol and glycerin. These are both solvents and remove the active ingredient from the bark into the liquid. The soaking is without heat, for several days. Then, we use a screen to remove the solid particles, leaving a liquid of alcohol, glycerine and the extract that has been removed from the bark.No heat is used during this process. Then, this mixture is put into a vacuum chamber, no heat, so the alcohol escapes from the mixture, leaving a brown mud -- made of glycerin (oily) and the extract. The vacuum will not remove glycerin or extract. This brown mud would not "flow" into a capsule, in a capsule filling machine, so we then mix additional Pau d'Arco ground bark WITH the mud, enough so that the combination will flow in a capsule filling machine. From the amount of extract we get out of the bark, and measuring the process, we figure that each capsule then contains the active ingredient that you would get from six cups of tea made by boiling the bark in water. When you pull our capsules apart the contents may seem dry, but if you put them in water you'll see that there is an oily slick on the surface. This is the glycerin. Glycerin is a harmless solvent.Take your Nature's Sunshine capsule apart, put in water. The contents will float on the water, as wood would do, but you will not see any oily slick, there is no glycerine, there has been no extraction process. They do not claim any extraction for their product.Alcohol, alone, is not a very efficient solvent. Pau d'Arco "tinctures" are made by soaking the bark in alcohol and water, only, and then removing the solid material and selling the liquid. It is workable, but you don't get as much extraction with alcohol as you do with both alcohol and glycerin.I've never heard of anyone having "bad" Pau d'Arco. I suppose it could happen. As far as I know there is only one company that importas Pau d"Arco bark, by the boatload, and that company sells to everyone else, including to my laboratory. Most Pau d'Arco is sold by simply bundling up the bark in bags -- sold in health food stores as "bulk Pau d'Arco bark" at about $15 per pound.Noni Juice? Another MLM rip off. I fell for it myself, bought a case per month, took it for a year, enjoyed the flavor, never felt any results, and it then took me several months to get my automatic monthly shipments finally stopped. It is well proven in the field of scientific studies that there is a "placebo" effect that gives a "good" result for about 25% of the people taking a sugar pill. There is a vast expose on this related to psychiatric drugs -- that sugar pills actually did BETTER than the psychiatric anti-depressant. I have this on this page:I've never seen any MLM in the vitamin business that has fair prices. They usually sell junk, or they sell, like Noni, stuff that no one else has -- at extremely high prices.Check my article on this at: http://www.oralchelation.com/faq/answers.htm particularly on the Amway vitamins.Your father could well be one of those that gets the placebo effect?Another thing about my Pau d'Arco.I recommend a very large dosage -- 5 capsules on waking, 2 every hour, and 5 at bed time, for treating cancer. But, my experience is that the person will have very dramatic results in three weeks or less, or none at all. Most people have dramatic results -- this means the cancer gets smaller, lighter in color, softer, or there is less pain. These are very objective measurements -- not subjective. You may send any or all of this to Nature's Sunshine, and invite them to respond to you or to me.If I get something from them, I would probably publish it on one of my web pages.I understand you are angry -- I would be also!Regards,]Karl Loren
If you missed it, you can go to either a SHORT explanation of the whole story, or a detailed explanation on ONE PAGE. On this page you are getting more detail on one part of the story, but on either of those pages you can get the broad picture. Don't miss reading one of them. You can actually spend many hours on this web site, depending on the depth of research and reading you want to do. There are an amazing 4,000 pages here -- more information on these general subjects than almost all other web sites combined! At some point along the way you will probably say, "Karl's crazy," and leave never to return to this site, or you will say "I want to try some of that oral chelation formula he writes about!"
